Faizabad is the rugged capital of Badakhshan province, perched along the rushing Kokcha River. It is the last major outpost of urban life before the terrain rises into the Pamir Mountains and the Wakhan Corridor. The atmosphere is that of a frontier town—remote, wild, and incredibly hospitable.

Travelers stay in Faizabad out of necessity and wonder. It is the only place to finalize permits and hire specialized high-altitude porters and 4x4 drivers for expeditions into the Wakhan. The local markets are famous for Lapis Lazuli, mined deep in the surrounding Hindu Kush mountains for millennia.

Visitor Notes

Expect very basic infrastructure; electricity can be limited to specific evening hours. Road conditions beyond Faizabad are strictly 4x4 territory. Movement timing is dictated entirely by weather and river levels, especially during the spring melt.
